How does the CHAO Pinhole Surgical Technique differ from traditional gum grafting?
Traditional gum recession treatments rely on donor tissue or soft tissue grafts, which aresurgically placed and sutured to the affected areas. While effective, this approach requires extensive stitching, leads to significant postoperative swelling, and involves a longer recovery period.
In contrast, the CHAO Pinhole® Surgical Technique offers a minimally invasive alternative. Instead of cutting and grafting, this technique gently repositions existing gum tissue through a tiny pinhole, eliminating the need for sutures or donor tissue. Patients experience less discomfort, faster healing, and immediate aesthetic improvement—all while achieving the same long-lasting results as traditional grafting.
How is CHAO Pinhole Surgical Technique performed?
With this technique, a tiny pinhole is created in the existing gum tissue using a fine needle. Through this opening, specialized instruments are used to gently loosen and reposition the gum tissue, allowing it to slide over the exposed root structure. To support the new gum position and promote healing, collagen is introduced into the treated areas.

Dr. Samintharaj Kumar is a distinguished Specialist Implantologist and General Dental Surgeon with over 20 years of experience in Singapore and the United Kingdom. He earned his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the National University of Singapore in 2001 and his medical degree (MBBS) from University College London, UK, in 2006.
In 2009, Dr. Kumar trained under Dr. Paulo Malo in Lisbon, specializing in All-on-4® / Teeth-in-a-Day implant surgeries and bridge restorations. As a former MALO Dental Director and the current ZAGA Centre Director for Singapore, he has built an exceptional reputation in complex dental implant reconstructions, particularly zygomatic implants for full-mouth rehabilitation. He has done the largest case series of zygomatic implants and the highest number of Nobel Biocare All-on-4® procedures in Singapore.
Dr. Kumar adopts a holistic approach as a biological dentist, emphasizing patient-centered care that prioritizes overall health and wellness. His medical background equips him to address complex medical issues relevant to dental treatments, especially those requiring special surgical attention.
